I’m a big fan of the concept of gastropub, offering great food in homey and comfortable setting of a public house..
Being in South Kensington and close to Knightsbridge post a problem in which ones to choose.. But I think the one I recommend is at Bumpkin
Bumpkin offers seasonal menu on british classic dishes and comfort food that boast the country’s seasonal ingredients..
So here is what I had…
First for starter, smoke duck with tomato dressing, watercress, gem lettuce, grapefruit and rhubarb and seared scallops with tempura cauliflower and tomato chutney..
The smoke duck is a perfect starter.. Smokey, woodey and sweet duck in crunchy and fresh lettuce cut by the sweet and tangy grapefruit and rhubarb makes it a very vibrant dish.. However, the scallops was abit overcooked and turn rubbery but the cauliflower was crunchy and sweet plus the chutney went well together
For mains I ordered grilled rump of lamb with roasted root veg and grilled duck breast with grain mustard mash, grilled asparagus and red wine and cherry sauce
The lamb was juicy and tender, cooked at a lovely pink and the veg were sweet cut by the savoury meat.. A well balance yet seemingly light dish… The duck was delicious, tender, savoury and the mash gives it a nice heat company by the sweet and fragrant sauce adds a fresh zing to the dish..
You just have to end the meal with the sticky toffee pudding.. I must say its one of the best.. Not overly sweet, spongy and soft pudding, fragrant from the spice and lovely toffee sauce and the vanilla ice cream that comes with it is a happy marriage of flavours…
So if you want stand out gastropub food that best utilises the seasonal ingredients I think you should try Bumpkin…
